The upcoming spring/summer collection for RANT clothing is called Grevillea. This collection features a collaborative print with artist Lesley Kendall who is the artist in residence at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane.
Les does beautiful watercolour paintings and it was one of her watercolours of Grevillea blooms that we have turned into a digital print and printed it on a grey/green background on a soft woven cotton fabric. I just loved using her original artwork as you can see the textures and subtle brush strokes which can be reproduced with the digital printing.
Les also helped source the bits and pieces for the 'sets' and backdrops, in fact many of the goodies we used were things she had created herself including a collection of cute birds made of twigs and found things in nature. Such a talented person and it was so much fun to do this project together.
The photo shoot was done on location at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic gardens in the Richard Randall Art studio and then out in the Australian native section which is where Les walks around and gets all her inspiration for her paintings. We won't share the outdoor pics yet, but here are some behind the scenes pics from the studio. We used lots of freshly pruned Grevillea blooms and leaves from our garden (cut at 6.30am before the shoot) and ones that Les brought in as we didn't have any red ones in bloom at the moment.
We were so grateful to the Botanic gardens and Les for letting us use their beautiful space to do this shoot. The studio was built in 1896 at South Brisbane and relocated in 2007 to the Mt Coot-tha Botanic gardens and has a wonderful feel with it's high ceilings.
The collection is due to be launched mid September, I will reveal more details closer to the time.
