Rant Winter 2022: The Merino Edit

The RANT Merino Edit collections are popular because we offer a small selection of cosy layers to add to your all year round garments that make winter dressing easy. By adding one or two merino layers you can add warmth without feeling bulky. And the merino jersey we use is Australian made in Melbourne from extra fine Australian merino wool that’s certified ethical by the RSPCA.
Last year we introduced a new ink colour in our classic shapes the wool Thea skirt and wool Nellie pants. We have just topped up the stock of these essentials, and also have the matching ink colour in our one size Spinner top. We had many requests for the Spinner top in ink last year but we didn’t have time to make any that season. This year those people are in luck, you can match the new ink merino Spinner top with the Ink wool Thea skirt or with the Wool Nellie pants. There’s also a matching ink bamboo Multitude top to layer under the Spinner for a complete monochromatic look. (see top pic above)
The second colourway in the new Spinner top is the olive green. To create a cosy warm all olive green look, you can layer the Spinner top over the Plum tunic both from the same 170gsm soft merino jersey, nice and warm while still lightweight (shown above).
Many of the styles I add to a new collection are because I need that piece in my own personal wardrobe. This year we have a new cardigan style, the Embrace Cardi. This style combines 3 different types of merino knitted fabrics, all from the same Melbourne mill, all ethical merino. The back and sleeves are a merino rib, the same as the snuggly Nest Vest. The back yoke is a thicker merino Ponti which feels nice over your shoulders and the lighter merino single jersey drapes as the front panels and attached scarf. There’s a cotton tape detail down the side seams which offers two levels for the belt to thread through. The tie belt can be loosely tied at the back or around the body to secure it when wrapped over at the front. The scarf can be left loose and long, tied, looped around your neck as well as tied to the back and out of the way (see pics below).
We have a new Antidote top this season. This is a nice winter style that we seasonally make in different rib fabrics. The 2022 version is made from a beautiful stretchy rib that is 67% Lyocell (an eco-fabric) 28% wool and is 180gsm weight. This is not sheer but I styled it over a bamboo Greta singlet as a base layer. This will make it snuggly warm while leaving the sleeves single layer. It’s not bulky at all, making it the perfect style under jackets, vests, dresses and tops to add warmth and colour. Did I say colour? Yes, goblin green and cobalt to create a lively look.
This year we attempted to source again the perfect ‘pant weight bamboo jersey’ It’s really hard to get consistent weights when knitting and dyeing our bamboo jersey, so we have learnt to work with what weight ends up being created. The light-mid weight 250-300 gsm is what we like to use for our tops and sometimes summer weight printed leggings. The heavyweight 380 gsm is perfect for gutsy pants, warm and offer good coverage. We use this for the Vera pants and Fortuna pants. These styles were created because the fabric ended up heavier than expected when finished, but I’m glad it did because when it cools down I live in my Vera pants because they’re more substantial than leggings. So on the third attempt to get 340 gsm batch, we were successful. That meant we could make our basic Lanky legs in plain black and the ever popular bamboo Nellie pants. We have had so many inquiries about when we would have them back in stock ‘because they live in them and need to get a new pair after the others have been thrashed!’ I’m super happy that I can finally say yes, we do have bamboo Nellie pants again, perfect for all year round.
The bamboo tops we have featured in this collection are, the Multitude top (see pic above) a simple raglan long sleeved layering top, the Dana top (see pics below) which can be worn on its own but perfect layered over the Multitude top or Antidote top, and the Copper 3/4 top for those who prefer a 3/4 sleeve.
For this collection we have done a small run of our slimmer pant shape, the Rambler pants. We had a small roll of a Japanese made stretch cotton that we always wanted to make into the Rambler pants but wanted to cut another fabric at the same time to get a few more. As we are only making limited quantities of everything this season we decided to make them now as they are a great winter style. The Rambler pants are slightly shorter and work perfectly with hi tops or boots. They have a slim leg, two front pockets and our soft stretchy organic cotton waistband. These will be full length on many people as our model Ruby is 185cm in height.
At the end of the shoot I styled an outfit, all black and using the Carrie Tails because it's such a great garment and this is an outfit I would wear. With great base layers you can easily create many outfits. I love starting with a Multitude top & Bamboo Nellie pants, simple black under-layers. The bamboo means it can be dressier if needed as its such a rich black colour, and simply add a top layer...vest, jacket, dress, top... or the Carrie tails.
This collection is available now in limited quantities. We made a total of only 27 Embrace Cardis, 9 of each size S/M/L. And 3 of each size have already gone down to a store in Canberra, The Department of the Exterior, and a medium for me as I don't want to miss out on one of these!
